Nicole Wise

I create art from seaglass and other found materials, mostly coastal. It started with morning walks that have become a ritual: walks with attention, with the intention to see my world in high resolution.

The commitment to observation and contemplation and my growing delight with my collection of small, beautiful things has shifted my worldview. I find that when I set out with an expectation that I will find gorgeous things, I do.  I reuse favorite pieces again and again and I mix things I have found with others I've bought from collectors around the world. Curating color, composition, shape, texture and playing with the always-changing mix of shadow, light and translucence leads to contemplation of how beauty evolves as time has its way with us.

My work centers on themes of emotional weather: calm, turbulence, reinvention and renewal. I am recently retired from a communications career at Yale School of Medicine, a writer and mother of four spectacular adult children. I live with my partner on the Connecticut shoreline.

My creative life focuses on collection and curation, arranging fragments and pieces into wholeness — a practice rooted in attention, sustainability, and the transformative power of color and light.
